Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer were the companies that merged in 1932 to create a symbolic brand, Audi AG, as we know it today. The Tale of Pioneering

August Horch, a German engineer was a pioneer of Audi who dreamed of making cars in his name. In 1899, he first realized to set up a company in Germany to fulfill his ambition. It is the saying that when there is a will there is a way, and August Horch proved to be the realistic example of the proverb. By burning midnight oil, his newly-born company launched its first vehicle in 1901, and from here the whole new chapter began for automakers. In 1909, he founded his second company namely August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH.

Soon after, he was forced to exclude the ‘Horch’ from his company name due to trademark breach. However, Horch decided to change the name to Audiwerke GmbH in 1910 finally. In the same year, he also introduced the first-ever car Type A that immensely garnered the attention of the buyers. Later on, the Audi cars started taking part in racing competitions and consecutively won for three years in the International Austrian Alpine Run. Hence, this event marked the dawn of chronicle of Audi, and continues to dominate the car market until today.

The first decade of the 20th century witnessed a growing trend of driving across Europe, while the manufacturers kept pace with increasing demand of consumers. By 1910, Audi Type car was released with a four-stroke engine, becoming the instant hit of that time. After attaining ample success, the manufacturer quickly launched Type B and Type C. All models featured same design following the success of its predecessor. It was all going well for Audi until the First World War when the company started build on military vehicles. However, the company faced severe financial losses, and it seemed almost impossible for Audi to get back on the track. But it was the persistent efforts and strong will power of the founder that the company stood up again. This time it came up with innovations and improved technicalities.

In September 1921, Audi became the first automaker to introduce a production car, with left-handed drive, famously known as Audi Type K. It is pertinent to mention here that in old times, the left-hand drive used to provide a clear view of oncoming traffic. In August 1928, the owner of Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (DKW), Jorgen Rasmussen, took possession of the majority of shares in Audiwerke AG. In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, Wanderer, and DKW to form Auto Union AG, which led to creation of Audi’s four rings insignia. Time by time, it received lots of technological advancements and developments. Afterwards, it successfully managed to launch the world’s first volume-built car with the front-wheel drivetrain. Thus, Audi remains unbeatable despite facing hurdles, and still, it starves for more success.
